Kambaba jasper is a striking green-and-black ornamental stone from Madagascar that is actually a volcanic rhyolite rather than a true jasper or fossil. Scientific tests (such as X-ray diffraction) show it is an extrusive igneous rock containing quartz, pyroxene, and feldspar rather than ancient fossilized algae or stromatolites, correcting a widespread long-standing myth. Kambaba Jasper features a deep forest-green background with swirling patterns and dark, orbicular black "eyes" made of amphibole needle aggregates.
